Upright-perching Water Birds

This search function groups species by taxonomic family, listing all species in each of their families together with their relatives. Once a family is selected, you can order the species listed by first, last, or scientific name.
These birds are usually seen perching on rocks or trees at the edge of the water. In most cases, their feet are located far back on the body, which gives the birds a distinctive upright posture when perching. The murres and puffins are patterned in black and white, while the cormorants and anhingas are largely or entirely black.
